Dystopian Short Story- Year 11
He stood looking down, staring. Like every other morning there was a paper crane lying on the ground. He picked it up and looked around hoping to catch the person who put it there, but there was no one else on the street. The paper crane was on his mind all day. The next morning he left early. He planned on waiting for the person who leaves the paper cranes. He hid at the corner of the street, three houses down from where the paper cranes always were. He had been standing then for twenty minutes and so far nothing had happened, so he stood to leave, but he stopped when he saw a girl emerge from the house that the paper cranes were always in front of. The girl looked around, then she lifted her hand and in her hand she held a paper crane. She lightly threw the paper crane and it landed in the exact same spot I find the cranes everyday. She smiled and retreated back into the house. He watched the girl retreat back inside the house, then he walked over and picked up the paper crane. Girl The next morning she got out of bed and got dressed. She went over to her desk and selected a piece of paper with hearts all over it. She was halfway through making a paper crane when she heard music outside. She stood and walked out onto her balcony and looked down over the edge. The boy who took her paper cranes everyday stood on the sidewalk surrounded by all the paper cranes she had made. He was playing a soft melodic song on a guitar. He looked up and smiled. He handed the girl a rose. ââ¬Å"How was it did you like it? â⬠He asked. She smiled at him and replied ââ¬Å"Yesâ⬠. The girl started coughing, he frowned ââ¬Å"Are you sick? â⬠She looked down ââ¬Å"Yes just a little.. â⬠she said quietly. She said later that she was so sick she couldnââ¬â¢t go to school for six months. ââ¬Å"I was wondering, why did you leave a paper crane out there every morning? â⬠He asked. ââ¬Å"Because I saw you walking by every morningâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The smiled ââ¬Å"You did that because you missed me, didnââ¬â¢t you? â⬠. He smiled. ââ¬Å"This popularity of mineâ⬠he laughed. ââ¬Å"By the way, Iââ¬â¢m Max. Whatââ¬â¢s your name? â⬠. ââ¬Å"Summerâ⬠she replied. Summer? Thatââ¬â¢s so prettyâ⬠He grinned ââ¬Å"Hmmâ⬠¦Then you siblingââ¬â¢s names would be Spring, Autumn and Winter? â⬠She smiled ââ¬Å"No Iââ¬â¢m an only childâ⬠He looked thoughtful ââ¬Å"How old are you? â⬠ââ¬Å"Seventeenâ⬠she replied. ââ¬Å"What month birthday? â⠬ He asked ââ¬Å"Juneâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Since I am an April birthday, I guess that makes you the oldestâ⬠He smiled. Sunny began to cough badly. ââ¬Å"Sunnyâ⬠she continued to cough ââ¬Å"Sunny? â⬠he said again ââ¬Å"Sunny! â⬠Max was worried now ââ¬Å" Whatââ¬â¢s wrong sunny? â⬠he put his arms on her shoulders. ââ¬Å"Are you okay Sunny? Sunny?! â⬠The doctor walked out into the waiting room, and Max rushed to him. ââ¬Å"What happened? â⬠He asked. â⬠Her condition has gotten worseâ⬠¦thereââ¬â¢s no more hopeâ⬠. Summerââ¬â¢s parent, who were seated in the waiting room, got up from their seats. ââ¬Å"What? â⬠Summerââ¬â¢s mother said. The doctor turned to the parents, ââ¬Å"Didnââ¬â¢t I say she should have gotten hospital treatment earlier? â⬠Summerââ¬â¢s father looked sad, ââ¬Å"Our daughter, she wanted to stay home so badly. â⬠Summers mother was crying, ââ¬Å"What are we going to do? What are we going to do about our Summer? The doctor looked at them, ââ¬Å"I think itââ¬â¢s time for you to prepare yourselvesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Max grabbed the doctor, ââ¬Å"What does that mean?! â⬠ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no monthâ⬠He said. Tears rolled down Maxââ¬â¢s cheeks, ââ¬Å"Excuse me? Doctor. Save her, pease? Doctor, Doctor! â⬠He fell to the floor and cried. â⬠Å"Please save her he cried, pleaseâ⬠. Max walked into the room where sunny lay in a bed within an enclosed glass area, he put his hand against the glass and looked down. Summer opens her eyes, and looks at him, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t want to show myself like thisâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Max smiled kindly at her, ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s nothing wrong with it. Youââ¬â¢ll get better soon anyway. They said in about two weeks youââ¬â¢ll be fine. â⬠Max pulled out his ipod, ââ¬Å" I brought this so that you wouldnââ¬â¢t be bored. â⬠He went to enter into the little room, ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t, You canââ¬â¢t come inâ⬠Summer said. Max pulled back ââ¬Å" Thenâ⬠¦what should I do? I really wanted you to hear this song, itââ¬â¢s my favourite lately. ââ¬Å" He looked at Summerââ¬â¢s sad face and thought for a moment, then he put his ipod down, ââ¬Å"Listen carefully itââ¬â¢s called I just want youâ⬠Max began to sing â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"There's something I gotta say to you, but I'm so afraid of what you'll do. Ooh ooh ooh ooh. I'll just admit this to you now, that I'm stuck on you like glue somehow. Ooh ooh ooh oohâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ As he sang tears rolled down Summerââ¬â¢s cheeks. And thatââ¬â¢s how Maxââ¬â¢s love hurt as soon as it startedâ⬠¦ Max pushed Summer around the hospital garden in a wheelchair, ââ¬Å"Man, itââ¬â¢s already spring. Summer, is there anywhere you want to go visit? â⬠Summer looked sad ââ¬Å"There is, but remember, I canââ¬â¢t goâ⬠Max looks down, ââ¬Å"Hey, what do you mean you canââ¬â¢t go? Where is it? Tell me. Iââ¬â¢ll bring a private jet and take you wherever you want to goâ⬠Summer smiles ââ¬Å"Really? ââ¬Å"Yes, really. So where is it? â⬠ââ¬Å"In my hometown thereââ¬â¢s a hill with a tree. Itââ¬â¢s the tree my dad planted the day I was bornâ⬠Max looked down in surprise, ââ¬Å"A tree? â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah. I want to see how big itââ¬â¢s gottenâ⬠¦before I dieâ⬠Max stopped pushing ââ¬Å"Hey , why would you die?! If you say that one more time, Iââ¬â¢m just going to kiss you. â⬠Summer smiles. ââ¬Å"In any case, donââ¬â¢t worry. I promise to take you thereâ⬠That night, Max wraps a blanket around Summer and they sneak out of the hospital. They get on a bus, and Summer sits with her head against Max and rests. After a while Sunny opens her eyes and without looking up she says ââ¬Å"I want to hear that songâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Max looks down at her ââ¬Å" I just want youâ⬠she whispers. ââ¬Å"Really? Hold on. ââ¬Å" Max grabs his ipod and places the headphones in her ears, and presses play. He smiles and slides his hand through her hairâ⬠¦ lock of hair comes away with his hand, and he looks at. Max leans his head against the window of the busâ⬠¦and silently cries. Max is carrying Summer on his back as they walk down a tree lined road. ââ¬Å"Arenââ¬â¢t I heavy? â⬠She asks. ââ¬Å"Noâ⬠he smiles, ââ¬Å"Wow, my Summer is so light. You need to gain some weight. Iââ¬â¢m going to feed you chicken, hamburgers, and lots of vegetablesâ⬠Summer hates vegetables ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t eat vegetablesâ⬠she says. ââ¬Å"Fine, Then Iââ¬â¢ll eat them and get strong, so I can piggy back you every day. â⬠ââ¬Å"What if I get so fat you canââ¬â¢t carry me? â⬠she asks. Max stops ââ¬Å"Hmmâ⬠¦then I can get just as fat, and we can roll around togetherâ⬠Summer laughs ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re crazyâ⬠she stops laughing and begins to cough. She puts a handkerchief against her mouth so she doesnââ¬â¢t cough on Max and when she pulls it away its covered in blood. Max sees it and his eyes widen in shock.
